If you have a hard time gaining weight, chances are you are an ectomorph or hard gainer. Ectomorphs are generally slim and lean and find gaining muscle hard work.
Those interested in bodybuilding and muscle building might well spend years trying to pack on a meaningful amount of muscle. While other people, called mesomorphs, seem to gain muscle just looking at the equipment in the gym!
Many ectomorphs turn to weight gainer powder and other dietary supplements in their quest to bulk up. And while these products can be beneficial, it’s crucial to choose the right quality product if you care about putting on muscle rather than fat.

Tips on How to Choose The Best Weight Gainer
There is no shortage of weight gainer supplements available. As a guideline as to what will suit your ambitions the best, we suggest that you consider these points when choosing your weight gain product.
1. Calorie content
Some weight gainers contain a massive number of calories per serving. While a sensibly sized serving would be something around 500-calories, some provide as many as two or even three thousand!
Unless you are already HUGE, this is simply too many calories and will probably cause a digestive upset as well as fat gain. Choose a weight gainer with modest calorie content, so your gains are predominately muscle.
2. Carbohydrate content
While most wannabe bodybuilders are all about the protein, most protein shakes are all but devoid of carbs. Low carb diets are great for weight control and losing fat. But if you want to gain mass, you need carbs to fuel your workouts and replenish your muscle glycogen stores after your workout.
A good weight gainer will contain around two to four grams of carbs for every one gram of protein. This 2/4:1 ratio is ideal for maximum weight gain because it promotes the releases of insulin which is essential for driving nutrients into your cells.
If you are serious about gaining muscle, forget about carb-free protein powder and make sure your weight gainer contains plenty of good quality carbs.
3. Sugar content
Sugar is a form of carbohydrate but, unlike carbs derived from grains and vegetables, carbs from sugar are speedy acting and devoid of any essential nutrients. In fact, sugar can best be described as “empty calories.”
Sugar is linked to a great many medical conditions including diabetes, obesity and heart disease, several forms of cancer, tooth decay, and systemic inflammation. In a sugar-coated nutshell, sugar is not suitable for you.
To make matters worse, a lot of dietary sugar is highly refined, which makes it even worse for you.
Before you buy your weight gainer, check that the product you are contemplating is not laden with refined sugar by reading the ingredients label carefully. Ideally, you should see no more than 10-grams of sugar per serving and preferably less than this.
4. Protein content
Protein is essential for muscle growth and, subsequently, all weight gainers contain protein. Ideally, you should get at least 30-grams of protein per serving plus the carbs as mentioned earlier. Protein contains amino acids which are the building blocks of muscle. You can get protein from foods like chicken, meat and fish. But having protein in powder form means you can get a protein fix without having to fire up the barbeque!
Most weight gainers use several different forms of protein, but ideally, the majority of the protein should be derived from whey. Whey protein is of high quality, easily digestible, and contains lots of essential amino acids.
5. Fat content
Contrary to popular belief, fat is not bad for you. In fact, some fats are so important they are called Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). Fat is vital for the production of anabolic hormones such as testosterone and Human Growth Hormone (HGH) as well as the digestion and absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.
Beware of trans fats and hydrogenated fats though; these are considered unhealthy. Many weight gainer products make a point of stating that they do not contain trans fats so look out for these and buy them in preference to products that do contain trans or hydrogenated fats.
6. Artificial additives
Weight gain drinks are often chock full of potentially unhealthy artificial additives like sweeteners, colors, flavors, preservatives, stabilizers, anti-oxidants, and other such things. Synthetic additives are inextricably linked to a host of medical issues such as attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, insomnia, and other unpleasant conditions.
Gaining weight should be a healthy pursuit, and yet some weight gain products are little more than heavily processed junk food.
It’s unlikely you will find a completely artificial ingredient-free weight gainer but do your best to seek out the one with the fewest chemical additives. You will probably pay a little more for a more natural weight gainer. But this will be money well spent – it’s your health we’re talking about here!
Taking a weight gainer without exercising will increase your scale weight, but you’ll add fat to your frame rather than healthy, aesthetically-pleasing muscle. If you aren’t sure what sort of exercise is best, check out the e-book called MuscleMaximizer.
Finally, if you are serious about gaining weight, check out steroid alternative supplements such as DBAL or HGH X2, a growth hormone optimizer that will make your weight gain endeavors even more effective.
