Discontinuing statins after stroke may boost second-stroke risk: Study

Heart disease patients should not stop taking cholesterol-lowering drugs soon after a stroke as it may boost the risk of a second stroke, according to a new study.

A team of researchers in Thailand found in the new study that patients who stopped taking statins within 3-6 months following a stroke were 42 per cent more likely to suffer a second stroke within a year as compared with those who kept taking the cholesterol-lowering drugs.

New Snail species named in Honor of Marriage Equality

Researchers in Taiwan have named a newly discovered species of snail in honor of marriage equality. The name was chosen as Aegista diversifamilia, as it is a hermaphrodite, which has both male and female sex organs.

It belongs to a genus of air-breathing land snails in the family Bradybaenidae. Aegista diversifamilia is a medium-sized snail with a shell ranging in height from 0.97 to 1.68 cm and width 1.98-3.24 cm. The shell is thin, but solid and glossy. It has a chestnut brown or yellowish-brown color and has a narrow and light brown spiral band on periphery.
