Japanese Scientists Create Robotic Bees for Better Pollination

Japanese scientists have created small drones which can help bees in taking over some workload of pollination. The robotic bees are tiny and they are capable of moving from one flower to another quite easily. During the process, they can collect and disperse pollen. However, the Japanese team working on the project added that a special gel covering these tiny drones is an innovative concept and plays an important role in pollination function of these robo-bees.

A team of Japanese scientists has successfully turned a small remote-controlled drone into a honey bee-like pollinator by attaching horsehairs layered with a special, sticky gel to its underbelly.

Flowers looking to receive pollen from their male parts into another bloom’s female parts often require an envoy to carry pollen. Those third players, such as honey bees, are called as pollinators.

Coconut crab’s pinching force is equal to bite force of adult lion: research

The pinching force of an adult coconut crab is almost equal to the deadly bite force of an adult lion, according to a study published in the journal PLOS ONE.

The so-called coconut crabs (Birgus latro), which inhabit islands in the Indian and southern Pacific oceans can grow up to 9 pounds in weight, with a leg-span of 3 feet. These large crabs can easily crack open the hard shells of coconuts.

Japanese Research Team Creates Humanoid Robot that Sweats

A humanoid robot developed by researchers at the University of Tokyo can sweat and uses this as a cooling mechanism. The motors of some robots generate heat and unless they have a way to cool themselves humanoid robots would not be able to work for longer hours. The robot named Kengoro can perform pushups for 11 minutes, as showcased by the tests conducted by the University of Tokyo team.

New, complex model suggests Sakurajima volcano could erupt catastrophically in next 25-30 years

New, complex model suggests Sakurajima volcano could erupt catastrophically in next 25-30 years

Researchers have warned that Sakurajima volcano, a Japanese volcano, could erupt in a disaster manner in the next 25-30 years. Last time, the volcano erupted in 1914 and as per the researchers the liquid magma is growing beneath the volcano every year.

Study’s co-researcher James Hickey from the University of Exeter's Camborne School of Mines in England, said that the volcano’s reservoir is expanding at a fast pace. From the current analysis, scientists would be better positioned to predict when other big-sized volcanoes could erupt.

Full moon could be linked to severe earthquakes: Study

Researchers from the University of Tokyo have claimed that full moon has a role to play in triggering big-scale earthquakes. During high tides, as per the researchers, there is an increased tendency for the occurrence of strong earthquakes.

Satoshi Ide and colleagues from the University of Tokyo have studied the data from the last 20 years and carried out different calculations like measuring the timing of high tides and reconstruction of the amplitude of the moon’s pull during the time of high tides.
