Sunscreen with 30 SPF can effectively shield skin from UV rays: Experts

Forgetting to apply sunscreen to the exposed body part before going in the sun could be deadly as ultraviolet radiation (UV rays) can cause skin cancer, experts say. In case of higher exposure time to direct sunlight, people should carefully choose sunscreen with optimum SPF.

Melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, claims one life every 54 minutes in the United States. Mostly, skin cancer is caused by cumulative exposure to the sun that causes mutations in the person’s DNA. The mutations make the cells to grow uncontrollably, which forms a mass of cancer cells.

Sarah Marts, of Fargo’s Catalyst Medical Center & Clinical Spa, said, “Many do not know that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and yet it's the most preventable.”

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) can effectively shield skin from UVA as well as UVB rays. SPF 15 and SPF 30, for instance, block 93 per cent and 97 per cent of rays, respectively.

SPF helps in shielding skin from UV rays, but it doesn’t block rays completely. However, some easy steps, such as wearing full-sleeved shirt, broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, could be used to boost protection.
