Checked-Earth Had Much Richer Life Billions of Years Ago Than Previously Thought: Study

The findings of a study recently conducted by the researchers at the University of Washington could change the belief how life actually evolved on earth.

The research focused upon nitrogen, which is considered to be a crucial ingredient of life. Scientists associated with the research believe that usable nitrogen had vey less supply during the early days of our planet.

University of Washington Earth and Space Sciences professor Roger Buick said in a statement that life on earth even before two billion years ago was thought to be very minute.

Buick said, "There would have just been a small biosphere of small organisms that weren't very abundant - a microbial scum in the oceans, maybe".

Researchers for the study analyzed ancient rocks, billions of years old, and found that the rocks had quite a good amount of nitrogen present in them.

This showed that early single-celled organisms had figured out how to make use of the nitrogen in the atmosphere, said researchers.

Researchers said this means that earth might have supported even much richer life billions of years earlier than previously thought.

Buick said that findings of the study also have implications for other planets such as Mars.
